As you can see by this post, the excerpt displayed on the main news page is NOT the first characters in this post. The character count exceeds the number set in the WordPress settings, and can be as long as you like. It will even except basic HTML tags for a little styling control. I wouldn’t recommend making these too long, but it is a great option if you want to introduce the post separately from the first sentence or two in the post itself.
